Preparing Your Home for a Painting Job with Coho Painting

Getting ready for a fresh coat of paint in your home? Proper preparation can make the painting process smoother and help achieve the best results. Here are some key tips to ensure your space is ready for Coho Painting in Auburn, WA.

Interior Preparation Tips

  1. Clean Your Walls: Before painting, make sure the walls are free of dirt, dust, and grease. Avoid using chemicals that might leave a residue! Instead, a solution of warm water and diluted vinegar works well to clean and prep the surface for painting.

  2. Protect Your Furniture and Floors: Move furniture to the center of the room and cover it, along with any flooring, to prevent accidental paint splatters. While our team is ready to assist, remember that we're painting specialists, not movers, so try to handle these tasks ahead of time!

  3. Store Valuable Items Safely: Secure any valuable or irreplaceable items. Keep in mind that things like cash or personal valuables should be put away in a safe place. We want to avoid any unnecessary stress over misplaced items, even if just temporarily!

  4. Clear the Space of Clutter: Tidy up and remove unnecessary items to provide a clean workspace. A decluttered environment helps us work efficiently and reduces the risk of any mishaps.

Exterior Preparation Tips

  1. Trim Back Vegetation: Cut back any shrubs, trees, or plants that are close to your home. This helps us access all areas of your exterior without obstruction. We can trim or wrap plants as needed, but keep in mind we’re painters, not landscapers!

  2. Move Outdoor Furniture and Decorations: Relocate any outdoor furniture, grills, or decor that could be in the way. Also, take down any fragile items that you don't want to risk getting damaged during the painting process. Please keep in mind we're not professional movers. We'll be careful but assume no liability for moving your items.

  3. Clean the gutters: Ensure your gutters are clean and free of leaves before a painter arrives to paint your exterior.

  4. Secure Windows and Doors: When cleaning the outside of the home, moisture penetration is the greatest risk.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Painting Process

  • Communicate Clearly: If you have specific requests or areas of concern, let us know beforehand. Open communication helps us meet your expectations and ensures a smooth project from start to finish.

  • Be Accessible: Be available to answer any questions that might arise during the painting process. A quick call or text can often resolve any uncertainties and keep the project moving forward.

  • Minor Repairs: If there are minor repairs needed, such as filling holes or sanding rough areas, it's best to address these before painting. We can make repairs, please let us know about them! This allows us to focus on painting after repairs are made, giving you the best possible finish.

The three most common issues we run into are:

  1. Not having a clean home free of chemical and oil residue. Sanding often misses this and we'll find our paint separating after application.

  2. Bushes and trees up against the outside of the home that HAVE to be trimmed back in order to paint.

  3. Not understanding we're not professional movers. A 500 pound bedframe without sliders with a post in the middle may get damaged by us. We do our best but we're not professional movers.

  4. Gutters jam packed full of leaves. We try to communicate about this beforehand but adds major time in preparation for cleaning your home especially if missed and found after cleaning.

By taking these steps, you can help us at Coho Painting deliver the highest quality service. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a seamless experience and a beautifully painted home. Let's work together to make your painting project as efficient and stress-free as possible. Remember, the better the prep, the better the paint adheres! Please note: While we can and will take care of many of these things please keep in mind that we are painters. Not professional movers, cleaners and landscapers.
